No, not that museum. It’s another one. And no, not the Crown Jewels. It’s the latest painting by M. Henri Porcupine, gasp! And to top it all off, Marlowe’s Aunt Foo Foo is arrested for the crime! Double gasp!
Your young reader will follow right along side of Purrlock and Marlowe around the Parisian streets, study the scene of the crime, look at the clues, and interview the suspicious suspects. And… with any luck, they might have time to go visit the Eiffel Tower.

Calgary Public Library virtual visit
Yesterday I had a great time visiting with the Calgary Public Library and all the students. Together we talked about my book series (both Paw & Order and Middle School Misadventures), read through the first chapter of my book, Paw & Order Vol 1: The Grilled Cheese Caper, and talked about my early cartoon and book influences. Even though it was virtual, I was still able to do my drawing demos for them. I hope they had as good of a time as I did!

Children’s book author/illustrator, Jonathan Roth, sits down to talk to author/illustrator, Jason Platt.

Last October I had the opportunity to speak at the Virginia Children’s Book Festival in Farmville, Virginia. It was a blast. Not only did I get to meet the passionate group at the VCBF, but also met a lot of creative individuals who ALSO write books and from there some who also illustrated them!
One of the other presenters was fellow author and cartoonist Jonathan Roth. Neither one of us had met before, but when we found out that we were going to be doing a ‘How to Cartoon” segment together, we bonded quickly.
His books Rover and Speck are fantastic. And his picture book, Almost Underwear is a great journey from the Wright Brothers to NASA.
Jonathan also interviews children’s book authors, and about their upcoming work. He asked me if he could interview me with my latest series, Paw & Order Vol 1: The Grilled Cheese Caper.

Author/Illustrator, Jason Platt on WHBF’s Living Local talking about his middle-grade graphic series, Middle School Misadventures.
Yesterday, in preparation for the holiday season, I had the pleasure of being on WHBF TV 4’s Living Local segment, where I talked about my middle-grade graphic novel series, Middle School Misadventures. It was great to talk about its origins, about my process and my favorite parts about being an author. When I was younger I devoured any information like this from professionals, and I always love to answer questions on the process. You never know who you might inspire.
People have often asked me if I’m nervous about going on shows like this, and I’m not. The interviewers are always top notch and are always looking out for you. Although—I have to admit—I always walk away from an interview as if I stepped off of a rollercoaster. The whole thing is a whirlwind, and so fast, that I walk away wondering what I have even said.

Middle School Misadventures lands in Finland!

It’s always exciting when you get to hold the book that you’ve published in your hands. It’s on a totally different level when you get to hold your book when it has been translated into an entirely different language! My middle-grade graphic novel, Middle School Misadventures, is in its 6th country to be adapted, and I just received the Finnish version of my book.
The differences between the English version and the Finnish version of Middle School Misadventures
I love flipping through and seeing the differences that had been made. But I especially love seeing the large handwritten sections like the above photo. I’ve always been impressed seeing how foreign publishers, and their graphics departments, handle and mimic what I’ve done; successfully capturing the look and feel I was going for. Chapter four, of my first book, is usually the first thing I flip to when pulling out the first copy from the box. I always want to see how Newell Grumbles in a different language.

Every now and then someone will ask me how involved I am with the production of my books when they are being translated. And the answer is: none. The publisher has all the information they need when they receive the files from Little, Brown books. Occasionally I might get a question that an editor is trying to work around. Such as: Not too long ago I was asked why does Newell call his dad, Poppio? What does that mean? I chuckled because it made sense to myself and didn’t think that it might be confusing. I just said that it was a dad-nickname that Newell has for his dad. A term of endearment for him if you will. Small questions that I can answer to help bridge the translation to their audiences.
I’m extremely grateful for all the people who have worked on my books. Here in the States and abroad. It always makes me happy to know that kids, all over, get a chance to follow Newell and his friends on his misadventures!
